Domain-Dependent Planning Heuristics for Locating Containers in Maritime Terminals

چکیده
Maritime container terminals are facilities where cargo containers are transshipped between ships and land vehicles. These terminals involve a large number of complex and combinatorial problems. One of the important problems is related to the Container Stacking Problem. A container stack is a type of temporary store where containers await further transport by truck, train or vessel. The main efficiency problem for an individual stack is to ensure easy access to containers at the expected time of transfer. Since stacks are ’last-in, first-out’, and the cranes used to relocate containers within the stack are heavily used, the stacks must be maintained in a state that minimizes on-demand relocations. In this paper, we present a set of domain-dependent planning heuristics for finding the best allocation of containers in a yard-bay in order to minimize the number of reshuffles. To this end, the problem is distributed into a set of subproblems in order to be solved more efficiently. The resultant configuration of the yard will satisfy a set of constraints such as balanced bays, minimum distance for dangerous containers, etc.

Optimization-Simulation for Maritime Containers Transfer
This paper proposes a simulation model to analyze the handling and the transfer system of containers in Le Havre seaport. The decision variables of simulation are determined by using the CPLEX optimization software. The goal is to determine the least expensive strategy for the transfer of a set of containers between container terminals. The simulation model is developed using an object-oriented...
متن کاملCoalition-based Approach for Reach Stackers Routing Problem in Container Terminals
The emergence of containerization had revolutionized the freight maritime transport. The number of the daily handled containers is continuously growing, and port authorities are facing new challenges. Depending on the organization and the level of automation of the container terminal (CT), different vehicles are used to transport the containers, such as Automated Guided Vehicles , Reach Stacker...
متن کاملStowage and Transport Optimization in Ship Planning
We consider the ship planning problem at maritime container terminals where containers are loaded onto and discharged from ships using quay cranes. The container transport between the ships and the yard positions in the terminal is carried out by a fleet of straddle carriers. Based on a stowage plan provided by the shipping company, the dispatcher assigns containers to specified bay positions. ...
متن کاملDiscrete-Event Dynamic Systems Modelling Distributed Multi-Agent Control of Intermodal Container Terminals
Maritime intermodal container terminals (CTs) are complex hub systems in which multiple transport modes receive and distribute freight to various destinations. They can be considered as interchange places in a transport system network where seaways, railways, and motorways intersect. Freight is usually organized, transported, stacked, handled and delivered in standard units of a typical contain...
متن کاملStacking policy for solving the container stacking problem at a containers terminal
Maritime container terminals are facilities where cargo containers are transshipped between ships or between ships and land vehicles (tucks or trains). They can be automated; semi-automated or static ones depend on the type of the equipments that they contain. There are crucial resources at container terminals; the yard, cranes and the vehicles. The yard refers to the temporary storage area whe...
